On September 24, a series of “Happy Reading for Remote Areas” activities and opening ceremony of the 100th Charity Reading Room sponsored by Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province and Focus Today Column of Guangdong Radio and Television Station, co-organized by Gaotian School, Filaixia Town, Qingcheng District of Qingyuan City, Duruan Primary School (Songyuan Campus), Duruan Town, Pengjiang District of Jiangmen City, Xialu Primary School Liuzu Town, Xinxing County of Yunfu City, was concurrently held, with the aim of pushing forward accurate cultural poverty alleviation and cultural resources popularization, equality and sharing. Some 10,000 items of books and magazines were donated by the Library to the above three schools that enriched their library collections and provided more accesses for children's extracurricular reading in such remote areas.
Since as early as 2011, the cultural volunteers service program themed with “Book Donations for Remote Areas”, initiated by the Library, has collected more than 300,000 books across Guangzhou, and built up 99 Charity Reading Rooms within schools and rural culture stations located in remote areas of northern, western, eastern Guangdong, benefiting over 100,000 primary and secondary school students and villagers. For the 100th one, this special event was concurrently organized, with live broadcasting in three schools of different cities, making it a window for more people to know about and support this beneficial program.
Zheng Yinghong, Deputy Director of Guangdong Radio and Television News Center, said in her speech at the main venue of Gaotian School in Qingyuan City that, the Program of “Book Donations for Remote Areas” is of great meaning in pushing forward accurate cultural poverty alleviation, cultural benefits to the people, and caring for poor children and unattended children. And they would, working with all radio and television stations of various levels, further promote the program across the province. Wang Huijun, Director of Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province, stressed in his speech that, the Library, as the provincial one, will continue to bring its leading role to full play in strengthening the construction of cultural resources in remote areas, and calling on more caring for children in rural areas. Students were singing and dancing to embrace their dream for future and demonstrate their thirst for knowledge.
As President Xi Jinping pointed out, “libraries are key symbol of the level of a nation’s cultural development, and important places for nourishing the minds of its people and forging hard cultural confidence. ” Inspired and guided by this, the cultural volunteers service program of “Book Donations for Remote Areas” will remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind, pressing ahead and bringing more happy reading resources to them.
