On March 23, a Reading Sharing Session was co-organized by the Department of Foreign Language Collections and the Library of Goethe Institute Beijing, where German writer Anja von Kampen shared her authored book series Knietzsche with some 43 library visitors.
The character in the book series named Knietzsche, is a cartoon image, rather popular among German kids, and is so-called “the little philosopher”. Kampen explained some of its secrets and the process of its artistic creation. In the Session, she read aloud affectionately all three books themed respectively with friendship, happiness and anxiety; and elaborated on such daily philosophical matters with simple and interesting examples. For instance, on establishing friendship, it may as soon as meteors shooting from the sky, or as slow as snails crawling bit by bit; on gaining happiness, it may like having hiccups, you never know when they would come and go. Also,“death” was mentioned, a topic that should be avoided in some parts of Germany. She skillful compared man’s life to taking a bus in her story—at each stop with people leaving and coming out of accidents, diseases, and some may stay on the bus for the rest of their lifetime.
Besides, she shared her artistic formation of the book. The German word Knietzsche is coined with the great philosopher’s name Nietzsche and the capitalized letter K meaning kids. In her thinking, kids are born to be great thinkers with plenty of ideas. Before creating each story, her writing group would do much research and read a lot of philosophy books, then condense the fruits and findings into decades of picture pages so as to guide how kids should work out deep philosophical matters independently. The Series have been animated in many countries and greatly welcomed by kids and parents.
This Session was well-received and the author Kampen with her books were highly praised for their educational significance rooted for and curiosity aroused among kids.
