Editorial Section of Library
Tribune
Library Tribune, originally named as
Guangdong Library Journal, was founded in
February 1981. In 1991, the name of the journal
was formally changed into Library Tribune. One
year later, the publishing frequency was also
adjusted from quarterly to bi-monthly, and
circulated through post office domestic
distribution. With China National Serials Number
of CN44-1306/G, International Standard Serials
Number (ISSN) of 1002-1167 and Post Office
Domestic Distribution Code of 46-127, each copy
of Library Tribune pages 168 since the first
issue of 2003.
Under the supervision of the Guangdong
Provincial Department of Culture, Library
Tribune is jointly sponsored by Sun Yat-Sen
Library of Guangdong Province and the Library
Society of Guangdong.
Library Tribune, an academic journal of social
science, undertakes the mission to publish
results of academic research of Library and
Information Sciences, to exchange the working
experiences and relevant information, to promote
the further development of library and
information cause. It has columns such as
"Contend•Explore",
"Network•Electronic•Automation", "Information
Building", etc.
The journal has been greatly improved and
gained a high reputation during recent years,
and was thrice awarded the title of "National
Excellent Journal on Library Science" by China
Society for Library Science in 1995, 1998 and
2002 respectively. As a core library and
information journal in China, it was also listed
in many national directories and databases, such
as the Core Journals of Chinese Human Science
and Social Science Directory in 1999; Chinese
Core Journal Directory, the third edition, in
2000; Database of Chinese Science and Technology
Journal in 2002. After strict selection, Library
Tribune, as one of the three excellent journals,
was included in the first exhibition of Today
Publication in Guangdong, which itinerated among
three North American cities, New York, San
Francisco and Vancouver, from late November to
mid-December, 2002. In July 2003, Library
Tribune was successively listed in the Database
of Comprehensive Evaluation of Chinese Academic
Journal, Database of Chinese Journals, Wanfang
Data ---- the digital periodicals and the
Database of (Selected) Chinese Core Journal.

Research and Training Section
The Section undertakes the mission to engage in
theoretical research of library science,
irregularly publish library working
communication, reflect situations of Guangdong
public libraries, train librarians, hold library
operation and knowledge courses one or twice
annually, cooperate with education departments
to carry out the adult higher education of
library science, offer consultations about
library operations, visiting, and library
building, hold itinerant tutoring lectures
throughout the province, provide research
materials and services of loaning and reading
with its reading-room of library science.
In addition, the secretariat of the Library
Society of Guangdong included in the same
section, undertakes the business of organizing
academic activities of all kinds, developing
society members, printing the society working
correspondences and the secretariat routine.

Reading-Room of Library Science |

The reading-room, under the Sun Yat-Sen Library of Guangdong Province, has a collection of approximate 30,000 copies and 100 periodicals of library science, information science, archive science and philology. It is also one of the institutions which houses such plentitude of materials mentioned above. The reading-room opens to all related research readers and provides services of open-shelf reading and lending. |

Technical Section
The Section provides the services of
photography, processing, digital changing,
searching, reading and coping for rare books,
periodicals and newspapers. The Section includes
Audio-visual Reading Room, Microfilm
Photographing Room and Microfilm Scanning Room.

Audio-Visual Reading Room, with its characteristic collection of Oscar films, houses 2000 pieces of video materials, 1000 pieces of audio materials and a large quantity of CDs, feature VCD. Patrons can enjoy the audios and videos in ten suites for 4 persons each, and a small video room for 10 persons. There is a well-equipped comprehensive room that accommodates 120 persons for renting. Other services include the reproduce of audio and video materials. |

The Room undertakes the photo shooting and photocopy of ancient books in good edition and rare newspapers. At the same time, service of reading microfilm is available in the same room. |

Acquisitions & Cataloguing Section
Acquisitions & Cataloguing Section is responsible
for acquiring and cataloguing the Chinese books
published in China mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan
and Macau. The Section consists of four groups:collecting and exchanging group, acquisition group, Chinese book cataloguing group and indexing group.
The collecting and exchanging group accepts publications published in local province, collects internal publications by government departments, enterprises, factories and other organizations, accepts donated books and is engaged in exchanging materials among libraries. The acquisition group orders and purchases Chinese books published in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The Chinese book cataloguing group is in charge of classifying, subject indexing and processing of Chinese books and works out the digital catalogues for readers' search in accordance with CNMARC. The indexing group draws up the machine readable catalogue for the project of "Database of China National Retrospective Bibliography (1966-77)".
The Section receives 2000 donated copies from
the groups and readers, purchases more than
24000 kinds of domestic books and 1500 kinds of
books from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau each
year, and the annual classification and
cataloguing amount reaches above 25000. The
Section has catalogued the materials by CNMARC
since 1996. The library has now stored 400,000
CNMARC bibliographies dating back to the year of
1966.

Cataloguing Center of Guangdong
Founded in 1996, the center aims at promoting
the standard of CNMARC (MARC of China National
Bibliography), developing the centralized
cataloguing and providing services concerning
book exhibition and sales. Welcome to inquire

Newspaper & Periodical Information
Developing Center
Newspaper & Periodical Information Developing
Center of Sun Yat-Sen Library is comprised of
four groups: the Restricted Reference Editorial
group, the paper-clipping group, the on-line
information developing group and the group
responsible for the Reading Room of Overseas
Chinese Newspapers and Periodicals.
Restricted Reference Editorial group compiles
and edits information from the overseas Chinese
newspapers and periodicals and publishes a
weekly restricted publication named Restricted
Reference for Decision-Making. Commenced in the
year 1991, Restricted Reference for
Decision-making emphasizes the feedback
information on overseas newspapers and
periodicals towards the economic renovation
reform and economic construction of China and
Guangdong Province. It contains 17 hotspots,
such as the state-own enterprises, the private
economy, the exploration of Chinese economic
renovation reforms and the like, and serves
public-policy makers with high quality
information. Besides, the group also issues
other popular restricted publications, for
instance, the monthly Restricted Cultural
Reference and the quarterly Restricted Reference
for Police, to meet the needs of different
patrons. So far, the electronic versions of such
restricted publications have been available for
users, and a full-text database has also been
set up.
Paper-clipping group specializes in collecting
and providing with the economic information
relating to certain vocations. Culling marketing
and new technology information, statistics,
specific vocational policies, developing
prospects and so on, from over 400 domestic
newspapers and journals, the group offers
clipping materials of more than 40 subjects,
which would benefit the entrepreneurs and the
start-up founders. Since 1994, thousands of
enterprises have been served, and many of them
are famous domestic corporations.
On-line information developing group stresses
the information from electronic publications,
websites and databases available on internet. It
makes use of over 300 internet resources and
database resources, and makes up more than 30
special electronic paper-clipping columns and
has established a full-text database containing
100,000 entries, which might be sent out to the
requested patrons by email or inquiry-answering
WebPages.
Reading Room of Overseas Chinese Newspapers and
Periodicals holds a collection of more than 200
kinds of overseas Chinese newspapers and
periodicals published in Hong Kong, Macau,
Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia,
Philippines, Korean, American, France, etc.
Patrons with recommended letters are welcomed to
the reading room.

Network Information Section:
In order to develop document resources and
embark on digital library construction, the
Network Information Section, founded in 1991,
co-operates with the China National Library,
Zhanjiang Library and Beijing SuperStar
Electronic Technology Company to construct the
visual library resources on large scale. With
imported equipments, it scans 5000 kinds of
Chinese publications and produces the relevant
PDG format computer files. Shared by the 163 and
169 network systems, readers now not only can be
able to do the search by titles, authors,
subjects, classified numbers and even the
abstracts, but also obtain the electronic
version of original copies via internet.

Public Relation Section
Located on the first floor, the Public Relation
Section has an exhibition hall of about 550
square meters for holding exhibitions, lectures,
conferences, training and other cultural
activities. With exhibition facilities and
professional personnel, the Section is able to
hold any exhibitions and cultural activities.
The Section provides the services such as answer
questions about the Library, sell reading card
on internet, retrieval the catalogues of the
library's collections, electronic newspapers and
magazines and collect information as well.

Section
Chinese Newspapers & Periodicals Department
includes Chinese Newspaper Reading Area on the
first floor and Chinese Periodical Reading & Lending Area on the second floor with the
collection of 7,000 newspapers and periodicals,
5,000 current newspapers and periodicals and
about 300,000 bound volumes. The Section
provides the services of Chinese newspaper
reading, Chinese periodical reading and lending,
searching database in CD-ROMs and reference service.

Chinese Books Lending Section
The major section of Sun Yat-Sen Library, the Chinese Books Lending Section consists of Chinese Book Circulation Area, Chinese Books Reading Room and the New Era Electronic Library on the second floor, Reading Room of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Materials and Study Room both on the third floor. The Circulation Area has a stock of 300,000 books while the Reading Area has a collection of 180,000 with 180 seats. Reading Room of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Materials has a stock of 50,000 books and the Study Room is provided with 900 seats. The New Era Electronic Library provides catalogue searching of the library collections and digital new books reading free of charge.

Section of Books & Periodicals
in Foreign Languages
Section of Books & Periodicals in Foreign
Languages has a stock of 200,000 books as well
as a collections of 200,000 periodicals
including English, Japanese, Russian, French,
German and Italian, etc. Cooperated with Goethe
Institute (Germany), the section has set up a
German Information Reading Room providing
readers with books, newspapers, periodicals and
audio-visual items published by Germany. The
Reference Books Room of the Section collects the
famous reference information such as Chemical
Abstract, Biological Abstract and E.I.. The
Section has the database of ABI/INFORM Research
as well.
Services such as reference service and search of
foreign language information, retrieval of the
library collection of foreign publications,
translation are provided.

Ancient Chinese Books Section
Located on the fourth floor, the Ancient Chinese
Book Section collects 660,000 rare materials
including 20,000 rare books, 200,000 ancient
Chinese books, 160,000 series books, 30,000
local chronicles, epigraphs of 30,000 items and
200,000 volumes of domestic Chinese newspapers
before the P.R. China as well as those of Hong
Kong, Macau and overseas before 1990.
During the recent years, the Section has devoted
to developing the ancient book literature.
"The books, such as
Summery Literature of Ke Jia", "Abstracts of
the Library Collections from the Middle South
and the South West", "Dictionary of Chinese
Periodicals", "Official Documents of Guangdong
Defense during Dao Guang Period of Qing
Dynasty", "Manuscripts of Guangdong General
History", "Cantonese Biography of Qing Dynasty"
and "Dong Guan Chronicle During Chong Zhen
Period of Ming Dynasty" are edited by the Department.

Wende Branch
The Branch specially collects Guangdong local
literature, Sun Yat-Sen literature, materials of
Nanhai islands, autograph books of Guangdong
authors, materials of overseas Chinese in
Southeast Asia, historical materials of Qing
Dynasty, paper-backed books and periodicals of
the Republic of China. A special collection of Guangdong local literature,the Branch has nearly 80,000 kinds
(more than 300,000 volumes altogether) of Guangdong local chronicles,pedigree,
historical materials, old maps of Guangdong Province, Cantonese authors' writings,
newspapers, periodicals, maps and pictures.
The
special collection of Sun Yat-Sen literature
includes more than 5000 volumes/pieces of Sun
Yat-Sen's works, biographies, reviews, deeds,
pictures, records and materials about the
Revolution of 1911. The Reading Room of the
Branch provides the one-stop service of reading,
consultation, duplication, binding and posting.

Guangdong Province
Founded in May, 1958, formed with 26 members,
the Central Library Committee of Guangdong
Province is a committee coordinating public
libraries, university libraries and scientific
libraries. Cooperating with members and
